VideoLAN have now released the long anticipated version 2.0 of their popular media player VLC. It is now available for both Windows and Mac users.
Amongst the new features sported by VLC 2.0, users will benefit from faster decoding for a range of device operating systems, including multi-core, GPU and mobile hardware.
The new version will also support an increased amount of file formats, including professional level 10bit and HD Codecs.
In addition, VLC 2.0 will offer Blu-Ray playback support, although this currently remains at an experimental stage and will be subject to future testing to iron out the final creases.
The new version’s user interface has also undergone a nifty overhaul, with Mac users able to decide between Lion Grey and QTX black. Windows 7, Android, iOS and OS/2 users will be able to make use of new video outputs and a rewritten support for jpeg, png, xcg and bmp images.
Christened “Twoflower”, this new version represents a major upgrade to VLC. VideoLAN will no doubt be hoping to repeat the success of their version 1.1.x, which achieved an impressive 485 million downloads.
