Microsoft’s upcoming version 8 operating system has been given a logo facelift – the previous wavy lines which looked like a flag have been done away with, in favour of an actual window image.
Sam Moreau, Principal Director of Microsoft’s User Experience for Windows, explained in his blog: “We realised an evolution of our logo would better reflect our Metro style design principles… If you look back at the origins of the logo you see that it really was meant to be a window. We did less of a re-design and more to return it to its original meaning and bring Windows back to its roots.”
This retro logo choice is interesting given the fact that the Windows 8 user interface is radically different from the traditional version we are familiar with. It will have a “Metro” style start screen featuring colourful tiles linked to applications to allow for better tap and swipe motions on touchscreen displays.
Microsoft has done this primarily to enable a more streamlined user experience on both tablets and PCs. Nevertheless, they will face heavy competition from the likes of Apple iPads and Google Android devices – hopefully the new logo will lend them some luck in the battle for consumer market share.
