Google Aiming to Bring Voice Control to New TV Platform

Google has submitted a patent request for an exciting piece of software that will allow users to interact with their new TV platform using vocal commands.

The cutting-edge voice activated user interface will relay a command to the television or set-top box which will then display the requested information. The software can also turn the set on and off as well as allow for keyword searches for live shows.

Let’s not get too excited though, as it’s not yet set for guaranteed release. A Google spokesman recently commented: ”We file patent applications on a variety of ideas that our employees come up with. Some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don’t. Prospective product announcements should not necessarily be inferred from our patent applications.”

Nevertheless, Google aren’t the only ones toying with new voice control features. Both LG and Sony have announced voice support for their new TV lines at a recent Electronics Show.  Samsung is also developing Smart Interaction technology and according to rumours, Apple’s Siri software is evolving to see a HDTV release that works with their virtual personal assistant.

All in all, the user experience horizon is looking highly promising – by the looks of things, we will soon be interacting with a range of computing devices by merely voicing a command.

Testimonials

Ben and his team delivered a challenging web build for BDO in a ridiculously short time frame, with fantastic results and, importantly, with a smile. I highly recommend working with Spotless.
